Main event- NEVER Openweight Championship: Shingo Takagi vs Hiroshi Tanahashi

The main event of the evening will see Shingo Takagi defend the NEVER Openweight Championship for the second time against Hiroshi Tanahashi.

Shingo emerged from a hard hitting war with Jeff Cobb that earned many a match of the night honour on January 5 at Wrestle Kingdom 15.

Now his second challenger of his second reign presents a very different type of fight to powerhouse Jeff Cobb.

For Shingo, after a victory during World Tag League over Tanahashi and Toa Henare, the Ace left him unimpressed.

‘what makes you the “master of the century”?’

Takagi would query, before saying that he ‘expected someone to have a little more fun with’.

Shingo repeated those sentiments after new year Dash, when he named Tanahashi as his next challenger.

For The Ace, a win over Great-O-Khan on night one of Wrestle Kingdom did much to boost his self esteem after a difficult 2020.

Tanahashi has said that he’d like to ‘use the NEVER to bring myself back to the top’, but that’s a phraseology Shingo will have a lot of contempt for.

The Dragon takes great pride in representing the NEVER concept, and insists his is the toughest title, the only one he has eyes for.

As the Road to The New Beginning has developed, Tanahashi and Takagi have traded wins in tag team main events,

each success giving the Nagoya opponents a chance to express their standpoint.

In Korakuen Hall on January 24, Tanahashi stated his respect for Shingo,

saying that the Dragon understands full well the responsibility of being a champion,

but that nobody knows that position better than the Ace.

A great attraction of NEVER is in its openweight nature that brings different styles of matches;

even though Takagi and Tanahashi are both heavyweight, this bout will present its own thrilling styles clash.

Will it be the classical stylings of Tanahashi, or the rough housing down and dirty approach of Shingo?

4th Match: No Disqualification- Will Ospreay vs Satoshi Kojima

The fourth match of the night sees Will Ospreay tackle a furious Satoshi Kojima in a special singles matchup.

Wrestle Kingdom 15 saw Ospreay and Kojima both put in stellar performances that ended in disappointment.

Ospreay’s 30 minute plus war with Kazuchika Okada on January 4 saw him bring every bit of offense he had to his former brother in CHAOS,

but it was a Rainmaker that sealed his fate. This after Satoshi Kojima brought fire.

and fury to KENTA in a match for the IWGP US Right to Challenge briefcase taken at the last minute.

A Go2Sleep ended a match that saw Kojima bring every bit of the vigour that led to a historic run as a singles and tag team star in decades past.

At New year Dash, Kojima held his head high into six man tag team competition, while Ospreay burned with fury.

48 hours removed from his headline match in the Tokyo Dome, the Commonwealth Kingpin found himself third from the bottom of the night against opposition in Kojima,

Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Yota Tsuji he deemed beneath him. A win not enough, Ospreay delivered a Hidden Blade to the back of Kojima’s head after the bout,

and Great-O-Khan put Tenzan on the shelf with his own TTD finisher.

Now Kojima won’t let injured pride lie. After losses early in the tour, he was finally reunited with injured partner Hiroyoshi Tenzan on January 23 in Ota,

and the results were violent indeed. After disqualifications and no contests,

the fierce Third Generation member had already given the Briton more than enough to think on before what will be a vicious match. Now,

after a challenge thrown down on January 25 in Korakuen, this is officially no disqualification.

Kojima will have to use every weapon at his disposal to survive the bitter Ospreay in Nagoya.
