    New Japan Cup

After NJPW’s anniversary was celebrated on march 4 in the Nippon Budokan, March 6 and Ota marked 49 years to the day since New Japan’s first event in the same building.

Three highly anticipated New Japan Cup matches were fitting bouts for the scale of the occasion, and saw Shingo Takagi, Minoru Suzuki and KENTA advance to the round of 16.

    New Japan Cup 2021

The first tournament match of the evening saw Tomoaki Honma take on Minoru Suzuki. The underdog going into the match, Honma fired with his best shots from the opening bell, with chops landing on Suzuki before he scored with a bodyslam.

Two Kokeshi attempts missed however, and Suzuki was quick to punish Honma and catch him with an arm triangle over the ropes.

Outside the ring, Suzuki relentlessly pursued the neck of Honma and nearly scored a countout, Honma rolling back inside at 19.5.

The King wouldn’t let up, with stiff shots at the five minute mark, and a pair of PKs, but Honma was able to fire up through the pain and delivered a DDT to finally get some measure of offense.

A back suplex followed for Honma, and a bulldog led to the Kokeshi connecting. Suzuki was quick to stop Honma’s momentum however, firing in vicious open plalms and kicks before looking for the Gotch Style Piledriver.

Honma widened his base and steadily worked free with a back body drop, but Suzuki kept up the pressure.

Honma again fired up in the face of punishing strikes from the King, and connected with the Rocket Kokeshi to take Suzuki off his feet. Taking Suzuki to the top rope,

Honma looked for a back suplex off the top at the ten minute mark but was caught with a cravate instead; nonetheless Honma found a headbutt from the apron and landed the Rocket Kokeshi from the second rope.

Digging deep, Honma motioned for the Kokeshi Otoshi, but Suzuki resisted, and stayed on his feet through Honma’s lariats. The two men exchanged elbows center ring,

but Suzuki had the best of Honma with a series of hard shivers. The sleeper followed and Suzuki again went for the Gotch Style; Honma nearly caught Suzuki with a roll-up, but on the third time of asking, Suzuki’s Gotch Style scored to send him into the second round.

    New Japan Cup

Juice Robinson took on KENTA in the second of the night’s three tournament matches. KENTA took control of Juice’s new hair early to pull him in and take over with a firm headlock.

Juice’s power is as big as his hair however, and a back suplex and senton followed.

KENTA would bail outside, and out of view of the referee grabbed the ring bell to strike at Juice’s recently healed orbital bone.

Staying in control outside the ring, KENTA drove Robinson’s face into the steel guardrail before driving home boots within.

Robinson was able to summon up a spinebuster in response, and brought lariats to KENTA before a combination of jabs.

When KENTA went back to the injured orbital however, a tornado stungun was the result, and a diving lariat would give a near fall to the BULLET CLUB member.

A huge running boot would send Robinson flying off the apron to the floor, and KENTA elevated Juice over the guardrail to send him crashing into the timekeeper’s table.

As KENTA went for the kill with a Busaiku off the apron however, Robinson landed a devastating DVD on the floor,

following with a powerbomb center ring that had KENTA reeling and barely able to roll a shoulder at two.

Juice looked for Pulp Friction but was denied by KENTA, who bought time with Green Killer. With a trademark dropkick in the corner,

more damage was done to Robinson’s face, but Juice’s pride made sure he wouldn’t stay down, Juicebox connecting at the 15 minute mark.

Both men looked for their respective finishes, with Juice nearly scoring a roll-up win out of Go2Sleep,

but KENTA would respond with vicious backhands and palmstrikes.

A thunderous right hand from Juice almost led to Pulp Friction once more,

but KENTA countered into Game Over, wrenching back until Juice was forced to submit.

    New Japan Cup 2021

The main event saw Kazuchika Okada and Shingo Takagi battle to complete the left hand round two bracket. With fans intense in anticipation, a firm lockup started the match,

with Okada’s powerful legs bringing Shingo to the ropes. Okada would battle back into a headlock before Shingo invited Okada to knock him down.

The Rainmaker was not up to that task, but was able of sweeping Takagi with a drop toehold to get control of the match. With a basement dropkick,

Okada sent a frustrated Shingo to the floor, and kept the pressure up on the floor,

but the Dragon was able to react with shots into the guardrail and apron before a DDT on the floor at the five minute mark.

Homing in on Okada’s weakened lower back, Takagi targeted the area with stomps before a huge shoulder tackle and a suplex brought the Rainmaker down to size.

Okada had too much strength to allow Shingo to hoist him for Noshigami though,

and the Rainmaker finally got on his horse with a running back elbow and a DDT to the Dragon.

A Ryukon lariat would shut down Okada, and Takagi would hang on to the wrist to deliver two more before a Dragon Elbow. Takagi’s ego would get the better of him though,

as he preened and posed, setting up a ‘Pumping Rainmaker’ that Okada quickly denied with a flapjack. With Okada’s pride injured, he brought the pace and intensity to Shingo,

who responded in kind; as Okada evaded a sliding lariat and went for the Money Clip, Takagi responded with Noshigami.
